Dr Johannes Retief

PenCLAHRC SWARM Research Fellow

Kath Maguire

Johannes is a final year anaesthesia registrar on the South West Peninsula rotation. Alongside clinical commitments, this year-long fellowship (supported by PenCLAHRC) allows dedicated time for research activities, with the aims developing projects and gaining valuable research training and experience thanks to the wealth of expertise that PenCLAHRC has to offer.

SWARM (South West Anaesthesia Research Matrix) is an award-winning trainee-led research collaborative of anaesthetic and intensive care trainees in the South West Peninsula region. The SWARM model achieves economies of scale, carrying out multicentre projects across the region, allowing trainees to continue their involvement in research as they move around the deanery, and providing training and education in research to members. Established in 2012, it has a track record of delivering numerous projects including participation in, and recruitment to, NIHR portfolio studies.
